Getting dental implants is not a same-week procedure — and understanding that before you book is the single most important thing you can do as a dental tourist. If you’ve arrived at this page while planning, you’re already ahead of most people who fly to Phu Quoc expecting to leave with a finished implant.
This guide walks through the full process step by step, including the inconvenient truths. For context on costs and clinic options, see the dental implants treatment page and the dental tourism overview for Phu Quoc.
Before You Arrive
Two to four weeks out:
- Request current X-rays from your dentist at home. A recent OPG (panoramic X-ray) or periapical X-ray tells the Phu Quoc clinic how much bone you have before you even land.
- Submit X-rays to SmileJet for a free pre-assessment. This means your first consultation is a confirmation, not a discovery session. You’ll know in advance whether you’re a straight implant candidate or whether bone grafting is likely.
- Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery. Smoking is the single biggest cause of implant failure — nicotine restricts blood flow to the gum tissue and significantly impairs osseointegration. Most implant clinics in Phu Quoc will ask you to confirm this.
- Arrange accommodation near your clinic. After implant surgery you should not be travelling far. Phu Quoc town and the Duong Dong area have accommodation within 10–15 minutes of most clinics including Tri Hao Dental and Phu Quoc Luxury Dental.
- Book a CBCT scan. Most established implant clinics — Tri Hao Dental (5.0 stars, 218 reviews), Phu Quoc Luxury Dental, and Vinmec (JCI-accredited, 24/7) — have CBCT on site. Klava (4.5 stars) can refer for scanning if needed. Book this for your first clinic day.
Day 1: Consultation and CBCT Scan
Your first appointment runs 60–90 minutes. The dentist will:
- Review the X-rays you submitted in advance
- Conduct a full clinical examination of your gums, remaining teeth, and bite
- Take the CBCT (cone beam CT) scan — a 3D image of your jaw that shows bone height, width, and density at the exact site of the planned implant
- Discuss the treatment plan, including implant brand, crown material, and timeline
- Provide a written, itemised quote
The CBCT is non-negotiable for implant planning. If a clinic wants to skip it and go straight to surgery, that is a serious red flag. The scan shows whether you need bone grafting first — see the bone grafting page if that comes up.
Ask for the written treatment plan before you leave. Do not agree to surgery the same day as the CBCT unless the dentist has had time to fully analyse the scan — usually at least a few hours.
Day 2 or 3: Implant Surgery
Surgery is typically scheduled 24 hours after the CBCT to give the dentist time to plan implant positioning precisely.
What happens:
- Local anaesthetic is administered (several injections into the gum). You will feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain.
- A small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone.
- A pilot hole is drilled, widened in stages, then the titanium implant post is screwed into place.
- The gum is sutured closed over or around the implant (depending on whether a healing abutment is placed immediately).
- The procedure takes 45–90 minutes per implant. Two implants in the same arch on the same day is common; more than that in one session is unusual.
Immediately after:
- You will be numb for 2–4 hours post-surgery.
- You’ll receive antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and possibly a mild painkiller prescription.
- You’ll be given written aftercare instructions — make sure these are in English.
Temporary options: Ask in advance whether the clinic provides a temporary crown or a flipper tooth (removable partial denture) to fill the gap during osseointegration. Not all clinics include this in the quoted price, but it matters if the missing tooth is visible when you smile.
Days 2–7 Post-Surgery: What Is Normal
This is the window most patients underestimate.
- Swelling peaks on day 2 and day 3, then gradually reduces. Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.
- Bruising on the cheek or jaw is common and normal.
- Soft food only for at least 7 days — no chewing on the implant side. Think soup, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, soft rice.
- Antibiotics must be completed in full even if you feel fine by day 3.
- No smoking, no straws, no alcohol for at least 5–7 days.
- Mild throbbing is normal for the first 3–4 days, manageable with prescribed medication.
Call the clinic if you experience: pus or discharge from the site, fever above 38.5°C, implant that feels loose or has moved, or pain that is worsening (not improving) after day 4.
Months 2–5: Osseointegration at Home
This is the waiting phase — the part that makes implants a two-trip treatment.
Osseointegration is the process by which the titanium post fuses with your jawbone. It takes 3–6 months depending on bone density, the implant location (lower jaw heals faster than upper), and whether bone grafting was involved.
During this period:
- Avoid trauma to the site
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene around the healing abutment
- Attend your regular dentist at home for a check at 3 months
- Contact the Phu Quoc clinic if the healing abutment feels loose, if the gum is inflamed, or if you have any concerns
The clinic will advise you on the right return window based on your scan results and health status.
Trip 2 (3–6 Months Later): Crown Placement
Your second visit to Phu Quoc is typically 2–3 days.
- Day 1: The dentist checks osseointegration (X-ray confirms the implant has integrated), takes impressions or digital scans of the implant abutment.
- Day 2: The crown is fitted, adjusted for bite, and polished. Minor adjustments may take another 30 minutes on the same day.
- Day 3 (if needed): Final bite check.
Crown materials available in Phu Quoc include zirconia (most common, tooth-coloured, durable) and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Ask for the crown material to be specified in your written quote on Trip 1.

FAQ
Does implant surgery hurt?
During the procedure: no. The local anaesthetic is effective and you should feel only pressure, not pain. The discomfort arrives once the anaesthetic wears off — typically 3–5 days of soreness managed with prescribed medication. Most patients describe day 2 as the worst day.
How long does the surgery take?
45–90 minutes per implant. A two-implant session takes 90–150 minutes. Plan for a half-day at the clinic including preparation and recovery time before you can safely leave.
Can I go to the beach after implant surgery?
Not immediately. On the day of surgery and the day after, rest is non-negotiable. From day 3 onwards, gentle walks are fine but avoid swimming (seawater in the surgical site is an infection risk), sun exposure for long periods, and anything that raises your heart rate significantly for at least 5–7 days.
What if the implant fails?
Implant failure rates are low — around 2–5% globally, and similar at well-run clinics in Vietnam. Established clinics in Phu Quoc including Tri Hao Dental and Phu Quoc Luxury Dental offer warranties on implant work; confirm the warranty terms and what they cover (re-implantation, materials, labour) in writing before treatment begins. Vinmec’s JCI accreditation adds an additional layer of quality assurance for patients with complex medical histories.
