Phu Quoc is often sold as a beach escape, but visitors who stay more than two or three days quickly discover it has considerably more range than that. A national park covers 70% of the island. There’s an open-air safari, a theme park with the world’s longest over-sea cable car, pepper farms, fish sauce factories, and an evening entertainment complex that could fill three nights on its own. If you’re combining a holiday with dental treatment, the good news is there’s plenty to do between appointments – and several activities that are genuinely ideal for recovery days.

Here’s what’s actually worth your time.

1. Sao Beach – The Best Beach on the Island

Bai Sao sits on the south coast, about 25km from Duong Dong. The sand is powder-white, the water is calm and shallow, and it hasn’t been overdeveloped. Go before 10am or after 3pm to avoid the midday heat. Sunloungers and umbrellas are available for around $3–5 USD. A half-day is enough; a full day is better. Hire a motorbike or take a Grab to get there – it’s a 40-minute ride from town.

For a full comparison of the island’s beaches, see our guide to the best beaches in Phu Quoc.

2. VinWonders + Cable Car to Hon Thom

VinWonders is expensive – expect to pay $35–50 USD per adult for the full park, more for add-ons. That said, the cable car crossing to Hon Thom Island is legitimately impressive: 7.9km over open sea, taking about 15 minutes each way. It is, by most accounts, the longest over-sea cable car in the world, and the views justify the ticket price on their own.

The water park and rides are best for families with children. Adults travelling without kids often find the rest of the park underwhelming after the cable car. If you’re short on time, skip VinWonders and prioritize the sea – but if you have a spare day and don’t mind the cost, the Hon Thom crossing is worth it.

3. Vinpearl Safari

Vinpearl Safari is an open-air drive-through wildlife park with over 3,000 animals – giraffes, rhinos, zebras, lions, and more. It’s one of the better wildlife parks in Southeast Asia, with genuine space and mostly decent conditions. A half-day is the right amount of time. Tickets run around $25–35 USD for adults. Strong choice for families, and a reasonable outing even for adults. It’s located near the north of the island.

4. Island Hopping + Snorkeling

The An Thoi archipelago – a cluster of small islands off the southern tip of Phu Quoc – offers the best snorkeling on and around the island. Visibility is good between November and April (avoid June to September when the sea is rougher). Day trips depart from An Thoi port, typically covering 3–4 islands, with snorkeling stops and lunch included. Cost: $20–35 USD per person depending on the operator.

Go with a small-boat operator rather than the large party boats if you prefer a quieter experience. The reefs won’t win any awards by global standards, but the water is warm, the fish are plentiful, and combining it with a stop at a quiet beach makes for a good full day.

5. Dinh Cau Night Market

The best free activity on the island. The Dinh Cau Night Market runs every evening in central Duong Dong – seafood grills, Vietnamese street food, souvenirs, cold beer, and a reliable evening crowd. It’s where locals and tourists overlap most naturally. Go for dinner rather than shopping. Budget $5–10 USD per person for a full meal with drinks. The market is central, walkable from most Duong Dong hotels, and stays lively until around 10pm.

6. Phu Quoc National Park

The national park covers roughly 70% of the island and is largely undisturbed forest. There are trekking trails, a waterfall (Suoi Tranh – manageable in dry season, muddier in wet), and the chance to encounter wildlife including macaques, birds, and monitor lizards. The trekking is best for active visitors who want to get off the beach for a morning. Hire a local guide for the longer trails – navigation can be tricky and a guide adds genuine context. Entry is low-cost; guide fees are typically $15–25 USD for a half-day.

7. Grand World

Grand World is a large entertainment and shopping complex built around Venetian-style canals, open late into the night. It’s commercially curated, but the scale is impressive and it works well as an evening activity – particularly for dental treatment recovery days when sun exposure, swimming, and physical exertion aren’t advisable. Restaurants, live entertainment, walking paths along water, and a generally air-conditioned atmosphere. No entry fee. Budget $15–30 USD for dinner and drinks.

We’ve written more about using Grand World during dental treatment recovery.

8. Pepper Farm and Fish Sauce Factory Tours

Phu Quoc pepper is considered among Vietnam’s finest – the island’s soil and microclimate produce a pepper with a distinct flavour profile. Several farms near Duong Dong offer tours and direct sales. A fish sauce factory visit (Khai Hoan is the most visitor-ready) shows the traditional barrel-fermentation process that’s been running on the island for generations. These are best combined into a half-day excursion and typically arranged through your hotel or a local tour operator – $10–20 USD including transport. A genuinely good alternative to another beach day.

9. Duong Dong Town and Dinh Cau Temple

Duong Dong is the island’s main town and worth a slow morning wander. The Dinh Cau Temple sits right at the river mouth – a small Cham-influenced structure on a rock outcrop overlooking the sea, used by local fishing families. The surrounding area has a morning market, pagodas, and a local fish market (arrive before 8am for the full effect). Low-key and free. Good pairing with the local food scene.

10. Sunset at Dinh Cau or Long Beach

The west coast faces the sunset, and the stretch of Long Beach north of Duong Dong is one of the easiest places on the island to watch it. The Dinh Cau rock and temple area is slightly more atmospheric – you can sit on the rocks as the sun drops into the Gulf of Thailand. Both are free. Both are good. Show up 20 minutes before sunset, stay until it’s dark. That’s it.

Things to Do After Dental Treatment

If you’ve just had a procedure and need a day or two of lighter activity, Phu Quoc is actually well set up for it. Grand World in the evening is ideal – no sun, no physical exertion, easy walking. The Dinh Cau Night Market is similar. A morning at Duong Dong market followed by a slow lunch works well. Beach-walking at dusk (rather than full-day sunbathing) is fine for most procedures after 24 hours. A traditional Vietnamese massage is generally safe after most dental work, and the island has plenty of options at $15–25 USD per hour.

Avoid snorkeling, full-day beach exposure, and alcohol in the immediate post-treatment window. For a full breakdown, see our post-treatment travel activities FAQ.

How to Get Around Phu Quoc

Motorbike rental is the most practical option for most visitors – $7–12 USD per day, widely available at guesthouses and rental shops on Duong Dong’s main roads. You don’t need a specific licence in practice, but ride cautiously – roads outside town are decent but traffic can be unpredictable.

Grab (the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber) works reliably across Phu Quoc. It’s the safest and most transparent option for those not comfortable on a bike. Download the app before you land.

Metered taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun) are available but cost roughly 3–4x the Grab rate for longer trips. Fine for airport transfers and occasional use.

Most resorts offer day-trip transfers and can arrange transport to the key attractions. If you’re wondering more about costs more broadly, see our guide to how expensive Phu Quoc is and how many days to spend on the island.

Grab works well throughout the island – it’s the simplest choice for airport arrivals and for getting to places like Sao Beach without navigating unfamiliar roads.

expand_more Is VinWonders Phu Quoc worth it?
If you use the cable car and the water park, yes. The cable car alone -- 7.9km over the sea to Hon Thom Island -- is genuinely spectacular. Expect to pay around $35–50 USD per adult. If you only have half a day, skip it and go to Sao Beach instead.
expand_more What's the difference between Sao Beach and Long Beach?

Stick to low-exertion activities in the first 24–48 hours: Grand World in the evening, Dinh Cau Night Market, massage, a slow walk through Duong Dong, or sitting on a beach at dusk. Avoid full-sun beach days and vigorous snorkeling immediately post-treatment.
expand_more How do you get around Phu Quoc?
